- CALVF4: CALVF4 industrial foil barrier material is essentially a Mylar bag constructed from polyethylene laminated to a layer of aluminum foil. It protects against light, oxygen and moisture. With its ability to increase the shelf life of food products and protect sensitive components from corrosion, CALVF4 is an ideal barrier choice for products ranging from pharmaceuticals and cosmetics to frozen foods and bulk good storage.
- CALVF4N: CALVF4N foil barrier products are the result of a poly/foil lamination process. They have an outer nylon layer that provides an excellent oxygen barrier with a high degree of puncture resistance. Especially suitable for vacuum packaging products that have sharp edges, CALVF4N is constructed with heavy-duty interior sealing capabilities, so foods and goods that are susceptible to spoilage or corrosion are given robust protection.
- CALVF4W: CALVF4W is constructed as a white Mylar bag with a polyethylene layer laminated to a layer of aluminum foil. It provides effective protection against moisture, oxygen and light. With its excellent ability to form a barrier between odors and oxygen, CALVF4W is an ideal choice to protect goods ranging from diagnostic medical devices and pharmaceuticals to agricultural and food products.
- CALVF4C: CALVF 4C provides an excellent barrier against moisture and oxygen. Its applications are varied and range from packaging coffee to storing vitamins. CALVF 4C is an especially popular choice when vacuum packaging requires a barrier material with a low moisture vapor transmission rate — or MVTR. In addition, it can be constructed with a degassing valve to help provide further protection for organically active products. For decorative purposes, it’s also available in a wide selection of colors.

When should I choose a foil barrier bag over a clear or metalized barrier?
Choose foil when the product needs protection from light, oxygen, moisture, and odor. CALVF4 is a PET, foil, adhesive, and LLDPE laminate that also helps prevent oxidation and corrosion. Choose a clear barrier such as CALVAC 6X when the contents must be visible or vacuum sealed: it transmits more than 90 percent of light, so it does not block light. CALVF4M is a metalized foil laminate with buried-metal construction, a water vapor transmission rate of 0.05 g/100 in² per 24 hours (ASTM F1249), and Faraday cage performance, which suits static-sensitive components and moisture-sensitive powders.
Which specifications matter most for moisture-sensitive industrial parts?
Compare moisture vapor transmission rate, oxygen transmission rate, thickness, seal strength, and storage conditions. CALVF4C, for example, is 5.0 mil with a moisture vapor transmission rate below 0.0003 gr/100 in² per day, an oxygen transmission rate below 0.0006 cc/100 in² per day, seal strength above 13.5 lb per inch, and puncture strength above 25 lb. It can be built with a degassing valve. CALVF4 is 4.3 mil. Both have a one-year shelf life from the manufacture date when stored at 60 to 80°F and 40 to 60 percent humidity, away from direct sun and heat.
Can foil barrier bags protect metal components from corrosion?
Yes. The foil layer is a light, moisture, odor, and oxygen barrier, which helps prevent oxidation, corrosion, and moisture-related damage to components. Foil barrier bags are also used for chemicals, epoxies and adhesives, powders, diagnostic medical devices, and long-term food storage. Caltex recommends a material based on what is being packaged and the application.
Can I get custom foil barrier bags, and what test data is available?
Yes. Caltex converts CALVF4 from stock into rolls or pouches. CALVF4M is available in T-seal, bottom gusset, and side gusset configurations with zipper closures, and custom printing and thermal transfer are available. CALVF4C comes in several colors. Caltex materials are laboratory tested, and data sheets are available through the data sheets form. Test data and product documentation are provided during the order process.
