WHAT ARE MIL-SPEC MILITARY REGULATIONS?
To ensure everything from design and safety to reliability and conformity, the U.S. Department of Defense issues a set of standards known collectively as the MIL-STD — or military standard. While the MIL-STD document establishes the uniform requirements and standard practices for many of the components and materials used by the military, the MIL-SPEC — or military specifications — regulations go into even further detail with regard to specific technical and material requirements for items intended for military use.
When military items need to be shipped, the packaging used to ship them is also subject to MIL-SPEC regulations in order to protect these items from being contaminated and/or damaged due to forces such as water vapor, static electricity and electromagnetic interference.
As of 2001, MIL-SPEC-DTL 117 packaging regulations replaced MIL-B-117 for the description and requirements of the types of bags and shipping materials that manufacturers of military items are permitted to use. And while MIL-SPEC regulations are subject to change, you can always rest assure that all packaging materials supplied by Caltex Plastics meet the latest military specifications. It’s our job to stay up-to-date on these standards for any materials we supply.

Which materials can Caltex convert to a specified MIL-DTL-117 requirement?
Where applicable, all Caltex material can be converted to meet MIL-DTL-117, the detail specification for heat-sealed military bags. The MIL-SPEC range includes greaseproof, water-vapor-proof, and heat-sealable materials, including MIL-PRF-121G Types I and II, MIL-PRF-131L, and CP STAT 100M static shielding (conforming to MIL-PRF-81705E Type 3 Class 2). Which material applies depends on the specification, type, and class on the order.
What sizes, quantities, and configurations are available for MIL-SPEC orders?
Caltex supplies MIL-SPEC material as rollstock, tubing, and pouches. Machine-made pouches range from 1 x 2 inches to 48 x 120 inches, and hand-made bags and shrouds are available in unlimited sizes. Configurations include side gusset, bottom gusset, and zipper, with thermal transfer and multi-color printing. Caltex specializes in custom sizes and small quantities, carries one of the largest selections of rollstock, ships more than one million pounds of product per month, and manufactures 24 hours a day.
What documentation is available for a MIL-SPEC order?
Caltex materials are laboratory tested to ensure they meet stated specifications, and Caltex stays current on military packaging specifications. Data sheets are available through the data sheets form, and test data and product documentation are provided during the order process. To confirm the documentation that applies to a specific order, send the specification, type, and class with the quote request.
How do I submit a specification and request a quote?
Use the Contact Us form or call (800) 584-7303. The form asks for product type, bag or roll size, quantity, and what is being packaged. Add the specification number, type, and class (for example, MIL-PRF-121G Type II), any printing requirements, and the delivery deadline in the message field. Caltex endeavors to answer all inquiries within 24 hours on business days.
What is the difference between MIL-DTL-117 and MIL-PRF-121G?
MIL-DTL-117 is the detail specification for heat-sealed bags used in military applications. MIL-PRF-121G is the performance specification for waterproof, greaseproof, and heat-sealable flexible barrier packaging. They work together: Type II MIL-PRF-121G pouches are heat-sealable in compliance with MIL-DTL-117.
