What Is Polyethylene?

Polyethylene — often abbreviated as PE — is the most commonly produced form of thermoplastics. It was first discovered accidentally by Hans von Pechmann, a German chemist, in 1898. Since then, it’s gone on to dominate the plastics industry, with polyethylene resins making up over 30 percent of the global market in 2017.

In addition to the cost-effectiveness of its production, many of polyethylene’s physical properties make it a highly useful material. It possesses both high-impact and good ductility strengths. Furthermore, its resistance to most acids, bases, oxidants and reducing agents makes it impervious to many chemicals, vapors and gases. It even serves as a good insulator in electrical applications. Depending on its thickness and the ingredients added during its manufacture, polyethylene can range from being opaque to transparent.

Polyethylene Uses

From food-and-beverage-industry-approved polyethylene case liners to medical-grade LLDPE — or linear low-density polyethylene — products, various forms of polyethylene can protect everything from milk to blood from potential spoilage and contamination. This highly versatile material serves as the foundation for packaging products ranging from clear plastic film wraps and bubble wraps to heavy duty bags, covers and liners. What’s more: It can be colorized and printed on according to your needs.

Typically, lower-density forms of polyethylene are materially tough and ductile. Many forms of LDPE are capable of stretching more than five times their original lengths before tearing.

Polyethylene’s uses include trash liners, pallet covers, furniture covers, fabric bags, asbestos bags, clean room bags, anti-static films, amine-free bags, garment bags, FDA box liners and numerous medical-grade products — to name just a few.
